Corporate Citizenship
The Schwan Food Company actively seeks to improve the quality of life for its 18,000 employees and the communities where they live. Corporate charitable giving supports many causes focusing on youth issues, arts, education and charity.
Like many organizations, Schwan places an importance on donating to local charities. In the fall of 2005, the company matched employee contributions to donate more than $313,000 to the United Way. The company’s Jean Day Program, which invites employees to donate $1 for the privilege of wearing casual attire on Fridays, raised an additional $60,000 for local charitable causes.
Other corporate giving activities are focused on health care, fitness and community action. Donations have included a grant to support the Salina Regional Health Center’s development of a world-class treatment center, and contributions to YMCAs in Marshall and Salina.
Education
The Schwan Food Company often looks for ways to support education-focused efforts. The company announced in 2004 that it would fund up to $800,000 in Access and Opportunity scholarships designed to draw academically successful students from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area to study at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. Many of these students also accepted internships with the company. Other education-focused efforts include a scholarship endowment at Kansas State University in Salina, Kansas, grants to Students in Free Enterprise, and other efforts in the United States.
